The education facilities in the rural areas are limited in quality,
and the pupils who want to enter university must study in the
large studies for at least the 2 preceding years, which is extremely
costly.
While Thiện Chí does not have the capability nor a significant
added value in upgrading the general education system, it can
contribute in a niche: computer training. As of today 10 training
centres, have been equipped with 10 to 20 second hand computers
(unit cost of 2 million đ). Training has been provided for 2 staff
at each centre, for maintenance.
The success of these centres has been immense and
immediate. Over 1000 pupils have registered and for the 1st semester
the results were excellent (certificate A). As a result they will
have increased chances to enter university as they are gratified
with extra points.
To ensure the program does reach some of the poor,
the agreement with each school stipulates at least 10% pupils must
come from very poor families (registered as very poor with the People's
Committee). Our survey indicates that 8% pupils in secondary schools
come from very poor families.
