The Long Mỹ region

Long Mỹ is one relatively poor district of the 6 districts and 1 town of Hậu Giang province:
1. The population is 160.721people
2. Area: 396 km2
3. The district of Huyện Long Mỹ counts 1 town and 8 communes. It borders Kiên Giang, Bạc Liêu and tỉnh Sóc Trăng
4. This is a rather remote area, with 85% dirt roads. Much transport is by boat on the many canals and rivers. Capital is relatively scarce, agriculture techniques are still backward and jobs or employment very much less the local manpower. Most people live from agriculture.
5. For agriculture, it is mainly paddy & fruit trees (oranges, coconut). Although the sea is far, brackish water affects agriculture during the dry season.

Introduction

The program started in October 2004 in only 4 poor communes: Thuận Hưng, Xà Phiên, Lương Tâm và Vĩnh Viễn.

Contrat & permit : this program is planned till at least 2009.

The activities

This is a new program, started in October 2004. But all actuivities are planned to be implemented progressively, as in the other program areas. The local cadres have received specific training in PRA & program planning.
