One of the top priorities for rural people is to find an outlet
for their production, and know the best possible terms and prices.
Thiện Chí endeavors to collect such information and disseminate
it via the farmers' groups.
One very successful program for the last several years, has been
the cassava leaves program. Traditionnally cassava leaves are left
in the fields as a natural fertilizer of no market value. Thiện
Chí has identified a few buyers and assists the farmers in collecting
and selling the dried leaves:
- first by promoting this new "crop" in new remote communes
where a lot of cassava is grown. Laborers are paid 20.000đ/day
for a few days, to see for themselves how much work is needed
to collect a certain quantity of leaves. Little training is provided
as well.
- The program has set up a network of dealers to collect the leaves
from remote fields, they must pay a minimum price to the farmers
(usually >850đ/kg).
- The dealers transport them to the few grinding machines, one
of which has been bought by the program; the price paid at this
point is an indication for the other wholesalers of the minimum
price they must pay.
- Regular contacts are maintained with a few companies, well ahead
of the season, to know their intentions, agree on a schedule and
volume, price etc.
